Lesson 4:

How to Become Fluent in English (Without Living Abroad)

This is lesson 4 of the free English mini-course.

I’m going to reveal how you can speak English better than 95% of all the other students.

I used this exact strategy myself to become fluent in English.

And no, you don’t need to live in an English-speaking country or find native speakers to talk to.

It’s much simpler than that.

Here’s How…

This is the best strategy for becoming fluent in English:

Strategy to Fluency

The strategy has only two steps:

Step 1: Use English speaking lessons to practice speaking skills such as…

  • Forming statements with proper sentence structure
  • Asking questions with proper sentence structure
  • Telling stories
  • Expressing Ideas
  • Giving long speeches
  • etc.

Step 2: After your speaking skills have improved, start using the Imitation technique to expand your “speaking vocabulary” (the words you can use when speaking). Practice with this technique until you’re satisfied with your spoken English.

That’s all you need to do to speak fluent English!

Don’t underestimate this strategy just because you think it’s simple. This two-step strategy really works.

Want some proof?

To this day, I’ve never been to any English-speaking country. I’ve never taken an English speaking class. And I’ve never hired an native speaker to help me practice.

In spite of that, I was able to develop great English speaking skills. (I’m not perfect but I’m highly satisfied with my speaking.) I also own a pretty successful English channel on YouTube. I’ve published only 14 videos on my channel, but those videos have been viewed over 15 million times already.

I was able to accomplish all that because I improved my spoken English using the strategy I just shared.

You can speak excellent English too if you use the same strategy.

The Reason You’ve Failed to Improve Your Speaking Before.

Chances are, you have spent a lot of time looking for ways to master English. You’ve probably tried to apply learning tips and advice from several English teachers before.

But my guess is, your speaking hasn’t improved much.

How do I know this?

Because 99% of English teachers have no idea how to master a second language. The only reason they can speak English better than you is because they grew up in an English-speaking country!!!

Unlike those teachers, I truly know how to master a foreign language without living abroad. I became fluent in English on my own, without help from others. That’s why I know I can help you accomplish the same thing.

How to Get Started

Want to use this strategy to improve your own speaking?

If yes, I have an English speaking course that can help you do that. It’s designed to help you become a fluent English speaker using my strategy.

The course is called English Fluency Training. It consists of four modules (levels):

  • Module 1 — Basic
  • Module 2 — Intermediate
  • Module 3 — Advanced
  • Module 4 — Fluent

Let’s talk about each module in detail.

Module 1 — Master the Basics

This module is designed for students who…

  • Have trouble forming sentences.
  • Have difficulty forming questions with proper sentence structure.
  • Don’t have confidence because of their poor pronunciation.

If you have these problems, here’s how this module can help you:

Benefit #1: Improve your ability to form complex sentences

A common problem English students have is that they have trouble forming sentences. This makes them hesitate to speak English.

If you have this problem, you need a lot of practice, and this module will give you the practice you need.

Here’s how: in some of the lessons, the teacher will ask you a lot of questions in English. Your job is to answer every question out loud. Sometimes, you’ll have to provide short and easy answers. Other times, you’ll have to provide long and complex answers.

After you complete these lessons, you’ll be able to speak English with good sentence structure.

Here are some examples of the actual sentences you’ll be practicing:

  • “He’s not thinking about buying a new television.”
  • “If they get the chores done today, she’ll take them to Disneyland.”
  • “When they were little, they thought Santa Claus was real.”
  • “Max knows that drinking alcohol is bad for his health.”
  • “He wasn’t sad or angry that his mom forgot his birthday.”
  • “They can’t set up their meeting on Tuesday because Scott won’t be in the office.”

Benefit #2: Improve your ability to ask questions

Asking questions is an important skill. In a real conversation, you can’t just talk non-stop; you also have to ask questions sometimes.

Unfortunately, most English students cannot put words in the right order to form a question. Why? Because their teachers don’t teach them this skill. (I’m not surprised. This skill is very difficult to teach.)

But don’t worry. In Module 1, you’ll get to practice asking all kinds of questions in English.

Here’s how: in some of the lessons, the teacher will make a lot of statements in English. Your job is to turn each statement into a question.

Benefit #3: Improve your pronunciation (so that you have more confidence when you speak English)

Imagine that you’re talking to a foreigner in English.

You’re trying to tell him something. But your pronunciation is very hard to understand. So he responds with a confused look on his face.

Having good pronunciation is important. If your pronunciation isn’t clear enough, others won’t understand you. They will find it difficult to have a conversation with you.

The good news is, the lessons in Module 1 can improve your pronunciation.

Here’s how to use the lessons to improve your pronunciation:

  1. Use each lesson several times until you can say every sentence with correct sentence structure. Then move on to the next lesson.
  2. After you complete all the lessons, go back to the first lesson. Practice with all the lessons again. But this time, use the lessons to improve your pronunciation. Here’s how: when the teacher gives feedback, pause the lesson and repeat after the teacher. Do your best to imitate the teacher’s pronunciation. It’s quite difficult to change your pronunciation, so repeat each lesson several times.
  3. After 2 – 3 months, come back to Module 1 and practice imitating the teacher again. This is important. Like I said, changing the way you pronounce words is difficult. That’s why you need a lot of repetition.

I’ve personally used the lessons in Module 1 to improve my own pronunciation. I’m Thai. And I used to speak English with a strong Thai accent. (You can hear it in my YouTube videos, which were recorded in 2014.). So, I used the lessons to reduce that accent.

So, even if you’re not a beginner, you can still benefit from this module.

Lessons Get More Difficult as You
Progress Through the Course

Module 1 has 20 lessons. These lessons have different “levels of difficulty.

Look at the table below:

TopicNumber of
Lessons
Difficulty Level
Present Simple With Verb "To Be"2Easy
Present Simple With Verb "To Be" (Part 2)2Easy
Present Simple With Verb "To Do"2Easy
Present Simple With Verb "To Do" (Part 2)2Easy
Present Continuous2Normal
Present Continuous (Part 2)2Normal
Future Tense2Normal
Future Tense (Part 2)2Normal
Past Simple2Hard
Past Simple (Part 2)2Hard

Note: The more advanced tenses (Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Present Perfect Continuous) will be taught in Modules 2 and 3.

As you can see, the first few lessons are easy. But as you move on to later lessons, the practice will get more difficult. I designed the course this way because I wanted to keep pushing your spoken English to the next level.

Of course, the lessons in Module 2 will be even more difficult. So, let’s talk about Module 2.

Module 2 — Intermediate Training

This module is for people who…

  • Have trouble talking about events that happened in the past.
  • Can’t express their thoughts and ideas clearly.
  • Can’t say anything long or substantial in English. (Can only say a few basic sentences at a time.)

If you have these problems, here’s how this module can help you:

Benefit #1: Improve your ability to tell stories

Many students have trouble talking about events that happened in the past (using the Past tense).

So, in some of the lessons, the teacher will tell you a story (an event that happened in the past). Then, he will ask you a lot of questions about that story. Your job is to answer every question out loud.

That’s not all. At the end of the lesson, you will have to tell the whole story yourself from beginning to end. (You won’t get it right the first time. That’s OK. You’re supposed to use these lessons several times.)

Benefit #2: Improve your ability to express ideas clearly

Some students complained to me that they can’t express their thoughts clearly.

Oftentimes, they want to tell people what they’re thinking. But they can’t put it into words. So, instead of saying what they want to say, they usually say nothing (or say something very basic).

That’s why, in some of the lessons, you will get to practice expressing ideas.

Here’s how it works: the teacher will read you a passage (a piece of writing). Then, he will ask you questions about that passage. And at the end of the lesson, you’ll have to express the ideas from the passage in your own words.

Benefit #3: Improve your ability to give long speeches

Can you talk non-stop in English for 5 – 10 minutes without reading a script?

If you can’t, don’t worry. This module will train you to do that.

Here’s how: in some of the lessons, you will get to practice giving a long speech (to an imaginary person).

For example:

  • In one of these lessons, you have to convince your co-worker to stop complaining about his salary.
  • In another lesson, you have to make your sister believe that a busy person like her can become a writer.
  • In another lesson, you have to encourage your friend to keep working on his business.

Don’t worry if this sounds difficult. The teacher will guide you along the way so that you know what to say.

Want to know what it’s like to practice with a lesson in Module 2 ? Download a short sample here. (This is just a snippet, not a complete lesson.)

Note: unlike Module 1, to practice with the lessons in Module 2, you need to pause the video before answering each question. This is because some of the questions in Module 2 are more difficult and require long answers. (If you practice on your computer, you can easily pause the lesson by pressing the spacebar.)

How many lessons are in Module 2?

There are 21 lessons in Module 2. The lessons are grouped into five units. Each unit revolves around a specific topic.

Here’s the structure of this module:

Unit 1 – Complaining VS. Taking Action

  • Lesson 0 – Getting Started (This is not an actual lesson. It’s just a short tutorial.)

Feedback from a Customer

While creating this module, I sent the first three lessons to some of my early customers and asked for feedback. Here’s one of the responses:

Feedback from Mr. 盧瑞:

I practiced your lessons just now. It’s very nice. I’m saying it with my sincere thanks. From your lessons in Module 1, I’ve learned a lot, but although they were helpful, they didn’t get us to the most crucial and practical place of speaking, which I think is expressing your own ideas, having a long speech. But now you do get us to there. In these lessons, I’m saying what I am thinking under the environment you provide. I believe this is the best way to join the native speakers.

This final lesson is absolutely helpful! It pushes me to speak, to express what I’m thinking, which is exactly how language works. It’s a great way I’ve known for learners to get their English fluent, organized.

Module 3 — Advanced Training

As the name suggests, this module will help you speak advanced English. It will train you to speak in a way that 95% of English students can NEVER do.

In this module, we add a new method to our training. It’s called the Imitation technique—the same technique that I used to become fluent.

Here’s the structure of this module:

Unit 1 – Introducing Yourself

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 2 – Introducing Yourself (Part 2)

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 3 – What Are Your Strengths?

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 4 – What Are Your Strengths? (Part 2)

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 5 – What Is Your Biggest Weakness?

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 6 – How Did You Overcome Your Weakness?

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 7 – Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 8 – Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years? (Part 2)

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 9 – Talking about Your Education

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

Unit 10 – Talking about Your Education (Part 2)

  • Lesson 1 – Questions and Answers
  • Lesson 2 – Imitation

As you can see, there are 10 units. Each unit has two lessons. The first lesson in each unit is a Q&A lesson. The second lesson is an Imitation lesson where you can practice “imitating” (copying) a native speaker.

The two lessons in each unit are connected. They build on top of each other. When you practice with the Q&A lesson, you’ll learn some useful words and phrases, and those words and phrases will be used again in the Imitation lesson.

But why do we need two different methods together?

The reason is because these two methods improve different aspects of your speaking. They have different purposes.

For example, the Q&A method is very good at building vocabulary. In a Q&A lesson, if I want to teach you a new word, all I have to do is include that word in a lot of questions. To answer those question, you have to use that word in a sentence several times. This is a strength of Q&A. It’s a good method for teaching vocabulary.

But if I want to make you sound more natural, then an Imitation lesson is more suitable for the job. When you imitate a native, you have to pay attention to the rhythm and pronunciation and try to sound exactly like that person. So it’s a great way to sound more like a native.

So these two methods have different strengths. There are things that Q&A does better than Imitation. And there are things that Imitation does better than Q&A. But when you combine them together, you get the best results.

This training combination is the best way to improve your spoken English. I’ve reviewed several courses made by popular English teachers. Nothing even comes close to this.

But you don’t have to trust me. Download two short samples below and see for yourself. (These are snippets, not complete lessons.)

Module 4 — Becoming Fluent in English

The course would not be complete without this last module.

Here’s why this module is so important…

To become fluent in English, you need to have a LARGE speaking vocabulary.

Even if you can speak English with perfect grammar, you won’t be able to communicate well if you can’t use a lot of English words in speech.

So, if you want to become fluent, you need to expand your speaking vocabulary.

This module will help you do that.

How to Expand Speaking Vocabulary

In this module, I teach you another way to practice the Imitation technique. Instead of practicing with my lessons, you’ll learn how to practice the technique with English-language videos or podcasts that can be found online.

Imitation is the main reason I can speak English well, despite the fact that I’ve never been to an English-speaking country.

And I truly believe it’s the best language-learning technique in the world.

Here’s why:

  1. There’s no limit to how much you can improve. As long as you keep using the technique, your spoken English will keep getting better.
  2. Other than your speaking vocabulary, using this technique will also improve your grammar and pronunciation.
  3. You don’t need a speaking partner! All you need is some English material, which is readily available online (YouTube, podcasts, etc.).
  4. Learning English by imitating native speakers ensures that you will speak English naturally like a native.

This module consists of two lessons.

Lesson 1 — the Parroting Technique

Although Imitation is very effective, it can be difficult for beginners. So, in the first lesson of Module 3, I teach another technique called Parroting, which is a simplified version of Imitation. It may not be as effective as Imitation, but it’s much easier to do. Once you’re comfortable with this technique, you can move on to using Imitation.

Lesson 2 — the Imitation Technique

The last and most important lesson. This lesson contains two things:

Thing #1: Video tutorial on Imitation

In this video tutorial, you’ll learn how to practice Imitation by yourself with an English video you can find on YouTube. I show you all the steps required and let you see me perform the technique on screen.

Imitation-Video-Tutorial_r

Thing #2: The Guide to Using Imitation eBook

This used to be a short eBook.

But thanks to all the questions and feedback from students who purchased the old editions of the course, the eBook has been updated to include new information. It now has 5,900 words of useful tips and tricks.

In this eBook, you’ll learn:

  • Tips for how to practice Imitation effectively.
  • How to use Imitation to improve your explanation skills.
  • The criteria you can use to find good English material to practice with.
  • And much, much more!

After completing this module, you’ll know exactly how to expand your speaking vocabulary and become a fluent English speaker.

With this knowledge, you won’t need to spend thousands of dollars on expensive classes or private English tutors. You’ll know how to improve your speaking on your own, at home, using English material you have access to like movies, TV series, podcasts, etc.

Feedback from a Student

Want to know what to expect from the Imitation technique? Here’s the feedback from a Filipino student named Eunice:

I have been downloading a lot of podcasts especially those ideas and concepts that are connected with my field of work. Now I had master a 1-minute talk that i downloaded in TED talks podcast without consciously retrieving the words or phrases. It was just coming out automatically. It is really amazing. I am really excited of what my progress will be like in the months to come. I am looking forward to be more like you in the near future.
Thank you so much and Godbless

Frequently-Asked Questions

Click on a question to see the answer.

How does your course compare to the other courses?

I’ve reviewed all the courses created by other English teachers. I guarantee nothing comes close to the quality of my course. It’s the best and cheapest one available.

Right now, you won’t be able to find a course that’s better than mine because it doesn’t exist.

If you look at the other courses, they’re usually priced at $89 or $99. Although they’re more expensive, they typically contain only audio lessons instead of videos, so they aren’t very engaging. On top of that, their lessons tend to have the same level of difficulty. (The last lesson is just as easy as the first one.) It’s not an effective to teach English speaking.

Some of these courses don’t even let you try a single lesson since they know their lessons aren’t very good. But I let you try five sample lessons because I wholeheartedly believe in the quality of my course.

I live in China. Do you accept WeChat?

Yes, I do because it’s more convenient for Chinese people. The price is 490 RMB. If you’re interested, email me at contact@engfluent.com and let me know you want to pay with WeChat.

How much time a day should I practice with the course?

This is entirely up to you. If you’re busy and don’t have much free time, you can spend just 10 – 15 minutes a day practicing. But of course, you’ll improve much slower than people who practice more.

So, if you have some free time, I’ll suggest that you practice about 30 minutes per day. This allows you to complete the lessons in Modules 1 and 2 more quickly. Which means that you can start using the Imitation technique (taught in Module 3) sooner.

With that said, be careful not to rush because the lessons are meant to be used several times.

How many times should I practice each lesson?

I can’t give you a specific number. It depends on your current English level and how good your pronunciation is.

My advice is to practice each lesson until…

  1. The lesson has become easy for you.
  2. You can say all the sentences in that lesson clearly and with good-enough pronunciation.
My credit card’s currency is not the US dollar.

That’s OK. You don’t have to worry about the currency difference. The payment system will calculate how much you have to pay in your currency (based on the current exchange rate), and that amount will be deducted from your balance.

Can I open/use the course on my phone or tablet?

Yes, you can. The course consists of video files (MP4), audio files (MP3), and PDF files. These file types are very common. They are supported by most computers, tablets, and smartphones. So, no matter what kind of device you’re using, you can download and open the course on your device.
